Lightning causes Blackpool Tramway suspension

A major lightning storm on the Fylde Coast caused services on the Blackpool Tramway to be suspended between Thornton Gate and Fleetwood Ferry on Thursday 17th August. The storm hit the area the night before leading to damage to the overhead power supply and from the start of service no trams were able to run beyond Thornton Gate.

Trams were able to resume beyond Thornton Gate for a time before further repairs were necessary which led to further disruption and passengers directed towards the line 1 bus. Eventually full repairs were concluded by early afternoon and normal services resumed all the way from Starr Gate to Fleetwood Ferry.

The heritage tram service was not affected by the issue.
