Metrolink overnight parking trial a success

The trial overnight parking scheme at selected Manchester Metrolink stops could now be made permanent following the success of the trial period with 84% of respondents to a survey in favour. The trial started in December 2015 with passengers able to leave their cars at 15 tram stops on Friday and Saturday nights provided they were collected by 12pm the next day.

Initially conceived for the festive period the trial was extended and is currently ongoing to 31st July. The TfGM Committee are due to meet next week where they will discuss the potential for making overnight weekend parking a permanent fixture. They will be reviewing a report that recommends that 2,500 overnight parking spaces are made available (77% of parking spots available).

The stops where overnight parking would be available would be Brooklands, Stretford, Navigation Road, Bury, Crumpsall, Prestwich, Radcliffe, Whitefield, East Didsbury, Ladywell, Hollinwood, Oldham Mumps, Rochdale Railway Station, Derker and Shaw & Crompton. It isn’t possible for all parking spaces on the network to be made available due to limited space and land arrangements.

Cllr Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM Committee, said: “We’ve been really pleased to have been able to offer this trial to Metrolink customers. The take-up has been good and the response from the people we spoke to about the scheme has been very positive. We will now fully consider and discuss the proposals set out in the paper at the committee meeting and will of course update Metrolink customers once any final decision is made.”

What has Tameside done not to be included in the list?

    • Steve Hyde says:

I believe TfGM don’t own the land on which the Park and Ride Car Parks are located and that the terms of the leases prohibit overnight parking. The same conditions exist at Sale Water Park

  2. Frank Gradwell says:

Thanks – I’ll take it up with the Council – what type of negotiator takes a car park on terms that they cannot use 24/7 – not one that I would have tolerated on my team for five minutes!

    Typical Metrolink! shamateurish!

    • Kev says:

So we should have no parking there at all then if it can’t be 24 hour?

    • Ken Walker says:

Maybe the alternative that was on offer was no car park at all

    • Steve Hyde says:

Its nothing to do with the council. The land is in private ownership! A Park and Ride is generally useful next to the stop which it is associated with so TfGM didn’t really have much choice. If you are familiar with Ashton. which I assume you are, you will realise that space for Park and Ride sites is fairly limited. TfGM would have had to accept the terms of the land owner. The Ashton West site is owned by the Leisure Park and they built the car park, I am not sure who owns the Ashton Moss site.

I thin Kev and Ken Walker have hit the nail on the head in the real world.

Soccer Aid and Coldplay audiences left stranded after Metrolink closes up without clearing waiting passengers – looks like those overnight car parks are definitely needed!

Oh dear guys – if there is one topic you shouldn’t try to lecture me on it is property negotiation.

That is my fiefdom and I know, as do others, waffle when I see it.

TfGM and the PTE are big card holders – and should know how to play them. As for land being scarce in those parts – tell that to the swans next door – they seem to have negotiated 24/7 occupation

    • John Brookes says:

charter, you’ve been shown elsewhere to be less than reliable with your anecdotes. Why should we now start to believe you’re a crack negotiator. Bore off and stop ruining every online forum related to Metrolink!
