In Pictures: Open toppers rule at Crich

Tuesday 19th April turned out to be a fine day weather wise which meant that the three tram service at the Crich Tramway Village was solely operated by open trams for the first time in 2016. The chosen three trams were London County Council 106, Blackpool 236 and Glasgow 1068 with all three popular with visitors to the museum on this day.     Typical, the day after I’m at Crich the sun comes out and the open-toppers follow.. Oh well, still great to seem them all out to play.

    Great to see a boat in original(ish) condition too! The Blackpool ones only have the windscreen difference but look miles apart! It would be great if one day one of them could have the large one piece windscreen again to complete the ‘set’.

      Whilst I thought the earlier windscreens looked quite ugly, I agree it would be nice to have one like that for historic reasons. 225 (600) without windscreens of course is the other hope for the future!

        Whilst reinstating the lifeguards etc. Or should it stay as is as the ultimate guise of the boat ?

          Personally I’d rather see it returned to original condition, or as close as practical – but not as a high priority job. At least its running and on warm sunny days I doubt many passengers care about unauthentic bumpers and windscreens!

            This is true – although it is the least used, ironically, as I’m told the drivers hate it. This is due to the really low controller position. Intrerestingly it retains its original DB1 controller as opposed to the larger Z controllers on the other two. (These replaced the B18).
            I think 600 looks quite smart – certainly the embellishments are less hideous than 717!

            I’ll agree to disagree with you there then – I think 717 looks smart with its modern bumpers whereas 600 just looks bizarre! Like I say though, the main thing is that the trams are running and well maintained, these things can be addressed further down the track as funding and time allow.

    From a personal point of view 600 is lovely to guard, its all new and shiny and the seats move easily! I’ve only shunted it but the controllers are low! Personally I agree with Kev, its not that offensive and I hope we’ll see it out a bit more this year.
