Another unsafe building causes Metrolink disruption

Manchester Metrolink services were disrupted for a time during the afternoon of Friday 5th May after the discovery of an unsafe building on Mosely Street, this comes a little over a month since an unsafe building in Rochdale led to services unable to travel through to the Town Centre terminus for over a week. Fortunately this time the building was declared safe within a few hours but not before services through the city centre were severely disrupted, just as well the Second City Crossing is open as it could have been a whole lot worse.

Temporary road closures to mark start of Trafford Park Metrolink extension work

A series of temporary road closures are about to start as work to extend Manchester Metrolink to the Trafford Centre begins in earnest. Work will include major utility diversion and will enable trams to run in segregated lanes alongside road traffic when the line opens in 2021.

Picture in Time: Blackpool Brush 630

Today Picture in Time’s Blackpool edition features a tram now happily preserved at the Crich Tramway Village in a standard fleet livery but in these images it was carrying a bright all over advert for Karting 2000.

In Pictures: New ad for M5000 3095

The number of non-standard liveries on Manchester Metrolink has declined again of late with only one tram having been carrying a vinyl wrap advert, 3095. This tram was advertising Raytheon Software Engineers in a rather dark livery but this week these vinyls have been replaced by some which, shall we say, are a bit on the brighter side! The latest sponsor of the tram is Key 103, a local radio station, with the base colour this time being pink. Once again the ends of the tram are left free with the extensive use of contravision on the remainder of the tram.

In Pictures: Blackpool Jubilee 762 commissioned at Crich

No sooner has we uploaded the last story when some photos of Blackpool Jubilee 762 drop into our inbox! As we briefly mentioned in the story on the KLV’s test run, the completion of the work on 058 allowed Blackpool Jubilee 762 to enter the workshops to be commissioned for use during 2017. Following the movement of the Jubilee car to the workshop and its commissioning work the tram then went on its own commissioning run. Thanks to Peter Whiteley for these photos.

In Pictures: Tramlink KLV 058 on test at Crich

Recent visitors to Crich will have noticed that the stub track on the centre of the depot fan has been a bit more empty than usual with normal resident Croydon Tramlink KLV 058 in the workshop. The vehicle had required the fitting of a replacement clutch and with this now done the KLV was able to start testing. The return to use of 058 also meant that commissioning could start on Blackpool Jubilee 762 (the KLV is the only means to recover the large Jubilee car if it fails).

Van and tram collide on Manchester Airport line

A van and a tram have collided on the Manchester Airport line causing disruption to both Manchester Metrolink services and traffic in the area. The collision on Friday 29th April happened close to Shadowmoss stop and images from the scene have shown that 3076 was the tram involved along with a white Citroen Berlingo van. No serious injuries were reported but whilst the emergency services dealt with the aftermath Metrolink services from Deansgate-Castlefield were terminated at Wythenshawe.

Six becomes seven for May Day Bank Holiday Gold weekend in Blackpool

It only seems to have been a couple of weeks since the last Gold heritage tram weekend in Blackpool (probably because it was!) but with another Bank Holiday imminent, this weekend will see another intensive service operate. As a bonus not only will the standard six tram service run but a special seventh tram has been added on each day with the Illuminated Frigate in action on the Saturday and Monday and the Western Train on Sunday. And if all that wasn’t enough there is also a bonus heritage offering on Friday afternoon! Trams will operate from Friday 28th April to Monday 1st May.

Llandudno 7 back on the road

The Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Electric Railway Society’s replica tram no. 7 will be back out on the road this May Day Bank Holiday weekend following repairs to the faithful Matador wagon used to move the tram around the area. The tram will be at the Llandudno Transport Festival from Saturday 29th April to Monday 1st May which takes place on Bodafon Fields (which will hopefully be a bit less muddy this year than last!). As well as being on static display it is planned that no. 7 will be included in the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza Parade on both Saturday 29th April and Monday 1st May; this leaves Llandudno Railway Station at 1300 ending up at Llandudno Town Hall. 7 will return to Bodafon Fields for display following this run on both days.

Party of three at Taylor Street!

A momentous event took place at the Birkenhead heritage tramway on 23rd April, when Warrington 28 was moved from its long-term resting place to a new spot within the Pacific Road tram shed, alongside the running tracks. This means that, for the first time in the tramway’s history, it was possible to see three tramcars stabled side by side in the building!
