Bournemouth 85 to star at Crich ‘Tram Day’

The main enthusiast event for 2017 at Crich Tramway Village just got a lot more exciting, with the news that recent arrival Bournemouth 85 is set to be the star attraction this year! The tram is set to be displayed outside for ‘Tram Day’ on Saturday 16th September, before taking pride of place in the Great Exhibition Hall on its special narrow-gauge track.

In Pictures: Overhead line problems for Midland Metro

Late on Bank Holiday Monday, 28th August, two separate problems were identified with the overhead on Midland Metro meaning that a severely disrupted service was able to operate to start with on Tuesday 29th August. The two sites affected were just north of Wednesbury Parkway and at Priestfield.

In Pictures: Preparations underway for Seaton redevelopment

The major redevelopment at the Seaton Tramway which will see the terminus replaced with a more modern facility allowing visitors to take a trip back in time to the Victorian era Colyton station is edging closer with preparations underway for a temporary stop at Riverside Depot from the start of October.

Blackpool prepares for a ‘different’ Bank Holiday

As reported previously, the August Bank Holiday will see considerable disruption on the Blackpool tramway – and indeed for the town in general – with a partial closure of the promenade for several hours on three consecutive days due to a series of concerts taking place at the Tower Festival Headland. Even though the tramway is being split in two for this, an enhanced heritage service will still operate and an outline plan is now available.

Work underway on new look Crumpsall stop

Work has now started on transforming Manchester Metrolink’s Crumpsall stop which will eventually allow services from the new Trafford Park line – due to open in 2020 – to terminate here and return through Manchester City Centre. As well as providing a service on the Trafford Park line this will give an improved service to passengers travelling from Crumpsall, Abraham Moss and Queen’s Road into Manchester City Centre.

In Pictures: A busy Horse Tram Day at Crich

The latest chance to enjoy a horse tram ride on the British mainland was on Tuesday 22nd August with Joseph again visiting Crich to pull Sheffield 15 between Town End and the Depot crossover. The day saw six different trams carry passengers – including the normal usage of Berlin 223 006-4 – not bad going for midweek! We are grateful to Hazel Quarmby for providing the following photos.

630 to join in with Blackpool’s Brush car birthday party!

Having already borrowed two preserved tramcars for 2017, Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours have now revealed that they will shortly be getting a third! Blackpool Brush Railcoach 630 is the latest tram to be confirmed to be heading to the seaside. The tram will be attending the ‘Brush 80’ celebrations which will take place over the now annual September anniversary weekend, meaning that all of the operational members of this class will be temporarily reunited.

Fresh paint for Sheffield 74

Not previously reported on British Trams Online is that Sheffield 74 is currently being treated to a complete exterior repaint in the workshop at Crich Tramway Village. The tram was already under attention to replace its mouldy top deck ceiling which had been damaged beyond repair by the damp conditions in the running sheds, and whilst it is in the works the tram is being given some extra TLC to ensure that it looks pristine when it returns to service.

Centenary car 641 helps its sisters

Whilst its latest transformation is ongoing, preserved Blackpool Centenary car 641 has also made a significant and welcome contribution towards the upkeep of its class on its old home tramway. Its owners, the Fleetwood Heritage Leisure Trust, have very kindly agreed to donate 641‘s compressor to the Blackpool Heritage Trust for re-use in one of their own Centenary cars, for which parts are not at all easy to obtain.
