Out and About: Balloon 700 on Heritage Tours in Blackpool again

During the first month of 2022, Blackpool Heritage Tram Tours regular weekend Coastal and Promenade Tours were mainly in the wheels of B-fleet Balloon 700. Now in wartime green and cream again the tram seems to have become a member of the heritage fleet again with its stunning paint job continuing to turn heads when out on the Prom.

Metrolink patronage back up to almost two thirds of pre-pandemic levels

Passenger numbers on Manchester Metrolink are continuing to rise again after the relaxation of restrictions to travel earlier this year. Whilst passenger numbers had fallen down to 41% of pre-pandemic levels in December, by the end of January it was back up to 64% with further increase seen since.

Nexus victorious at Rail Business Awards

Nexus and the Tyne & Wear Metro have returned from the Rail Business Awards in London triumphant having been won the Education and Training Excellence Award as well as being highly commended in other categories. The award was made in recognition for the boost they gave driver recruitment and customer service training by opening the new South Shields Learning Centre.

In Pictures: Work continues at both ends of Trams to Newhaven project

We return to Edinburgh again to see some of the latest progress on constructing the first extension of the Edinburgh Trams network from the city centre out to Newhaven. Due to open in spring 2023 it is planned that most of the work will be completed during 2022 and despite delays to the project caused by events out of the project teams control it is said to still be on time and within the revised budget.

Programme of events announced for Rush Hour on the Railways

This Easter Weekend (Friday 15th to Monday 18th April) will see the return of Rush Hour on the Railways to the Isle of Man with the heritage tramways and railways joining forces to offer a varied programme of events. For the trams that means that the MER will be seeing unusual combinations, a parallel run, car shed tours and of course an intensive timetable in operation.

Person hit by tram at Nottingham Station

A woman had to be taken to hospital on Wednesday 2nd March after she was hit by a tram at Nottingham Station tramstop. The incident happened shortly before 1700 and saw NET services suspended between Old Market Square and Queens Walk/NG2 until around 1800. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment.

Trams are back running on the Wirral Heritage Tramway!

It seems to have been a long-time coming but a tram service has finally resumed on the Wirral Heritage Tramway – albeit on a shortened section of line awaiting repairs to the track on the section to Woodside Ferry. The 2022 tram service was inaugurated on Saturday 26th February with no fan fare but when trams are back running who can complain about that!

Metrolink 3135 in service

The latest Manchester Metrolink M5000 to enter service is 3135. The tram has been noted in service on the Metrolink network at the very start of March and in doing so becomes the 167th passenger tram to run on the system since it opened in 1992.

Warnings to motorists after increase in car v tram collisions in Croydon

The number of car v tram collisions in Croydon are on the increase and management at London Tramlink are warning if the trend continues there could be serious injuries and service delays. Its reported that since 2020 there have been nine collisions and 59 near misses in the car v tram category whilst there have also been 105 emergency stops after pedestrians walked in front of trams.

Trams to Wolverhampton Railway Station from July?

After the Wolverhampton Railway Station West Midlands Metro extension missed its “end of 2021” opening date the question has been when may we start to see trams running on the new line? That now seems to have been answered with Transport for West Midlands planning on the first trams running on the extension by July 2022 – but only after further work takes place, with this due to get underway this month.

As we reported last week, Edinburgh Trams were up for four awards at the city’s Chamber of Commerce Awards with the winners announced on Thursday 24th February. In the end they won in one of the categories – but it was the big one as they were named “Large Business of the Year”.

In Pictures: Scottish Rugby crowds get their first taste of temporary Edinburgh Trams arrangements

The Scottish Rugby Union team played France at Murrayfield Stadium which as well as being their second, and final, home fixture of the 2022 Six Nations Championship was also the first major event in Edinburgh since the introduction of the temporary terminus at West End on the tram line.
