Record-breaking weekend for Metrolink

The weekend of Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June was a record-breaking one for Manchester Metrolink with 211,900 journeys recorded on the network (and with the Heaton Park Tramway closed for Parklife none of the journeys can be equated to there this time!). The same weekend also saw the 10 millionth contactless journey recorded on Metrolink since its initial launch in July 2019.

In Pictures: Balloon 723 returns to the 1990s

As we saw in our coverage of the Jubilee Tram Parade in Blackpool there was one tram included which featured a new look. Balloon 723 made its debut in a new coat of the 1990s fleet livery having spent the past few weeks in Rigby Road’s Paint Shop.

New Chair for UK Tram Light Rail Engineering Group

Ian Hale, Infrastructure Manager at London Trams, has been elected as the new Chair for the UK Tram Light Rail Engineering Group (LREG) at their latest meeting. He replaces outgoing Chair Ian Middlemiss from Transport for Greater Manchester.

In Pictures: Another Urbos3 starts testing in the West Midlands Metro

It looks as if we may not have too long to wait for more Urbos3s to enter service again on the West Midlands Metro as coming quickly after 21 being seen on test for the first time is 18. These are the second and third Urbos3 trams respectively which have broken cover from Wednesbury Depot in recent weeks and would seem to be a good sign that they have now been repaired and on the final road to re-entering service.

Light rail services to be affected by national rail strike

Although the national rail strike announced for 21st, 23rd and 25th June does not directly included staff working on any tram or light rail system in the UK there will be some impact on services where track is shared with Network Rail. Services on Manchester Metrolink, Stagecoach Supertram and Tyne and Wear Metro will all be operating a revised service on all three days.

Tyne and Wear Metro plant a tree for Queen’s Jubilee

Nexus and local community volunteers have teamed up to plant a tree at Cullercoats Metro station to help mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The plum tree was planted in a special ceremony attended by volunteers from the Cullercoats Collective, staff from Nexus and the High Sherriff of Tyne and Wear, Mr David Bavaird.

In Pictures: The full Volk’s Electric Railway in operation

Those of you who have been regularly following the fortunes of the Volk’s Electric Railway will be aware that the 2022 season started with a shortened route as services were only able to run between Aquarium and Halfway owing to works taking place on the seafront further along the line. In Pictures: Focus turns to hotel at Blackpool North Station

It has been a while since we took a proper look at the former Wilko’s site in Blackpool which will, in due course, be the newest tram terminus in the UK so that’s where we head in this latest article. As expected progress on site has turned towards the construction of the hotel and there is likely to be very little progress on the tram side until the hotel is completed.

Another delay for Wolverhampton Metro extension

Trams will not be running to Wolverhampton Railway Station in time for the Commonwealth Games after all. The much delayed extension has been delayed further, and although it is expected that the majority of construction works will be over by the end of July there will be some to complete from August with testing then following – subject to tram availability.

In Pictures: Another tram enters service on West Midlands Metro

The second day of the latest return of the West Midlands Metro saw another new tram enter service for the first time with 44 allocated to service having completed its mileage accumulation and being cleared for operation. With the entry into service of 44 this now means that all eight of the Urbos 100 trams delivered so far have run in revenue earning service.
