Edinburgh Trams Inquiry set to cost as much as Iraq war inquiry as it still goes on

As swift and thorough investigations go the Edinburgh Trams Inquiry has been more the latter than the former and now its been reported that the costs incurred have reached the same levels as the Iraq War Inquiry – leading to yet more headlines in the Scottish press about just how much it is costing to learn the lessons of the first phase of the construction of Edinburgh Trams. The Inquiry was first called in 2014 but some eight years later it still shows no signs of coming to an end with Lord Hardie said to be taking as long as necessary to reach his conclusions.

Major Metro closure starts 12th September

The Tyne and Wear Metro will be closed between Pelaw and South Shields from Monday 12th September until Saturday 3rd December as part of the Metro Flow project which will see three sections of single line doubled to allow the service frequency to be increased and to improve reliability across the network. The 12 week closure is the biggest major line closure ever seen on the network.

In Pictures: Track goes down on Birmingham Eastside extension

Whilst the plans to extend the West Midlands Metro in various directions has not been without its problems (delays to lines opening, funding concerns leading to the splitting into phases of extensions to name but two) there is still progress continuing to be made – none more so than on the Birmingham Eastside extension which has seen the first track recently laid in front of Birmingham Coach Station.

Tramlink strikes suspended

Planned strikes due to affect London Tramlink services between 12th and 14th September have been suspended after a revised pay offer was made to drivers represented by ASLEF. Details of the pay offer have not been made public but officials at ASLEF have said it doesn’t meet the aspirations of staff but that they are willing to continue negotiations to reach a deal that both sides can agree on.

The Great North Run returns to its traditional route on Sunday 11th September and to help move participants and spectators to and from the event, Nexus have confirmed that there will be extra services throughout the day on the Tyne and Wear Metro.

Man dies after being hit by a tram in Sheffield

A man died after he was hit by a tram in Sheffield late on Friday 2nd September. The incident happened at approximately 2115 close to the stop at Carbrook on the route to Meadowhall with South Yorkshire Police confirming that he had been on the track at the time he was hit. South Yorkshire Police are seeking witnesses to the incident.

The new vinyl wraps on Manchester Metrolink keep on coming – the latest to be noted out in service is on 3116 with a colourful advert for Sale Sharks (Rugby Union club) having been applied during August.

First new Metro trains completed

The first of 46 new trains for the Tyne and Wear Metro have been completed by Stadler with testing set to shortly commence ahead of them being delivered to the northeast. Two of the trains – in their attractive yellow and black livery – have been finished at the Stadler plant in Switzerland with dynamic and static testing the next step before being cleared for service.

We’re very nearly there with deliveries of the M5000s for use on Manchester Metrolink! The penultimate delivery – 3146 – arrived at Queens Road Depot on Saturday 3rd September, coming over a month since the previous tram was delivered.

In Pictures: Another Illuminations season begins in Blackpool

On Friday 2nd September Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen (a late replacement for Johnny Vegas) was the latest celebrity to switch on Blackpool’s Illuminations. Shining nightly all the way through until Monday 2nd January 2023, this period also marks the busiest time for Blackpool’s Heritage Tram Tours with Illumination Tours taking place on most nights during the Illuminations.

RAIB report released into September 2021 Metrolink incident which saw 11 year old cyclist hit by tram

The latest report from the RAIB looks at an incident in September 2021 which saw an 11 year old cyclist suffer serious injuries after being hit by a tram on the East Manchester Line when attempting to cross the tramway. As usual the report goes into detail of what happened in the incident and also gives some recommendations to try and prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.

In Pictures: Another update from the Trams to Newhaven project

We head off to Edinburgh once more as we take a look at some more of the progress being made on the Trams to Newhaven extension – due to open in spring 2023. Although the project has been delayed by global events outside the control of the contractors which saw a revised programme released during the summer, good progress continues to be made on construction and in this update we feature Picardy Place, McDonald Road, Foot of the Walk and the clock on Elm Row.
