Volk’s Electric Railway to run this weekend!

The Volk’s Electric Railway is usually closed to the public from October until Easter but this weekend (10th and 11th February) will see rare winter operation. It has been announced that services will run between 1000 and 1500 on Saturday 10th and from 1000 to 1600 on Sunday 11th February. The operation is planned to tie in with a Heritage Railway Association meeting taking place in Brighton and will be crewed by volunteers from the Volk’s Electric Railway Association.

Connection between old and new on West Midlands Metro reaches the end

Construction of the structure which will allow trams to run onto the new West Midlands Metro line to Dudley and Brierley Hill from the current line between Birmingham and Wolverhampton is reaching a conclusion, as seen in a recent site visit by Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street. With work on the main structure coming towards the end there is also a warning of disruption to tram services over he Easter period whilst the tracks are joined between the two lines.

Another Metrolink service change

The impact of the broken rail at Victoria is continuing to be felt by Manchester Metrolink and to try and improve reliability there will be a further change to services operating through the city centre. Whilst trams will still be unable to operate between Exchange Square and Victoria until further notice, some services will now return to operating on 2CC as from Monday 12th February.

In Pictures: 31 goes to Worksop

And repeat! One thing you can say for the constant movement of West Midlands Metro trams is that at least it seems to be keeping heavy haulage companies in business! As alluded to in our article yesterday there has now been another tram move with 31 this time taking  trip on the back of a lorry to make more room at the depot during the redevelopment works.

UKTram launch secondment scheme

UKTram have announced that members of their Executive Committee have agreed to support plans which will formalise secondments across the sector. Its hoped that the scheme will help the sector to retain top talent and also providing additional experience for ambitious young managers, engineers and other key personnel.

In Pictures: 35 & 17 return to Wednesbury Depot

After a two month gap between West Midlands Metro trams being transported on the back of a lorry we haven’t had to wait nearly as long for the next moves. Firstly, late on Friday 2nd February 35 was transported back from Dudley to Wednesbury after the conclusion of its repairs at the Very Light Rail Innovation Centre and then Sunday 4th February saw 17 come back from Worksop.

Minor NET delays after tram fault

Services on Nottingham Express Transit were disrupted for around an hour after a small external fire was spotted on a tram at Moor Bridge. The fire was discovered at around 0800 on Tuesday 6th February with services suspended between Bulwell Forest and Hucknall until approximately 0900.

In Pictures: Tram-Train delivery to Wales

As part of the major investment in improving railway services in Wales, Transport for Wales are receiving a fleet of 36 Citylink tram-trains. These are being built by Stadler in Valencia, Spain before being delivered to the UK and after the first few arrived in South Wales by road more recent deliveries have been by rail. One such delivery took place overnight on Friday 2nd/Saturday 3rd February 2024 with 398 001 arriving as shown in this pictorial article with images courtesy of David Mee.

In Pictures: Trams move around after Lisbon 730’s arrival at Beamish

As we’ve reported before, Lisbon 730 arrived at its new home of Beamish on Monday 22nd January 2024 which has seen a few changes of position for trams around the depot. This has seen another Portuguese tram moved outside for temporary storage whilst 730 itself has gone into the main depot ahead of being prepared for service.

Historic building by Newhaven tramline evacuated over safety concerns

A building which contains both commercial properties and flats on Lindsay Road in Newhaven has been partially evacuated over safety concerns with questions raised as to whether the works to build the tram line caused damage. Evacuation to 12 flats and businesses below in a building dating from the 1890s happened earlier in January after structural engineers were called out to investigate.
