Railways Division meeting in Newcastle between 6th and 8th October 2025, with insights from political and transport leaders across the world.
Amongst those who were at the event were Hitachi Rail whilst Cllr Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council and Deputy Mayor of the North East Combined Authority, gave a presentation of recent developments in the region.
Network Rail, Transport for the North, and the International Union of Railways reflected on the pivotal role of regional rail in supporting economic growth and social mobility with Oriol Juncadella Fortuny from Spain discussing how digital innovation is improving efficiency, and Fabio Bohner from Germany shared lessons from efforts to reintroduce passenger services on rural lines.
Steve Duckering commented: “Another great opportunity to connect with international colleagues and learn how regions are tackling similar challenges. There is a real sense of shared purpose in driving modal shift and making public transport more accessible to everyone.”
The meeting also included technical visits to the Northumberland Line and the newly redeveloped Gosforth Depot, allow firsthand insights into the latest investments in rolling stock and infrastructure in the northeast.
