In Pictures: Summer Supertram trackworks get underway

Its summer and what more excuse is needed for some more improvements works on the South Yorkshire Supertram network at a time which is traditionally quieter with schools out for their summer holidays. The first stage of works this summer are on the Blue and Purple routes near Manor Top, Hollinsend and Park Grange and work got underway on Monday 28th July as seen in these images from Stuart Cooke.

Scheduled to take place for 19 days – normal service should resume on Saturday 16th August – the work is set to see track renewal on Ridgeway Road between Manor Top and Hollinsend, and on Norfolk Park Viaduct, with rail sealing polymer being replaced near Park Grange tramstop and the replacement of clear plastic panels of many tramstop poster cases.

During the works:

  • BLUE route runs Malin Bridge to Sheffield Station, and Halfway to Gleadless Townend
  • PURPLE route is suspended
  • Replacement bus BP1 is running from Fitzalan Square (for good connections to the tram in the city centre) and Herdings Park

Details of the replacement bus service as provided at Fitzalan Square.

Although Blue route services were only running as far as Sheffield Station they still had Halfway as the destination with the added message that it would be via a replacement bus service. This is 125.

The main work at the moment is on Ridgeway Road on the outbound line just before Hollinsend.

Access to the worksite is not easy but this view shows the old track being removed.

Meanwhile, at Park Grange Croft a new piece of track is delivered with traffic being stopped for safety whilst this happens. (All Photographs by Stuart Cooke, 28th July 2025)
