Manchester’s Heaton Park Tramway have announced that whilst the substation repair works continue they will be opening their museum in the former Middleton Road shelter once a month until the end of September. The first opening date for 2025 will be on Sunday 25th May.
The tramway has been closed since September 2024 with major repairs needed to the substation to allow services to resume. This work is being completed in conjunction with their partners Manchester City Council but does not yet have a completion date so the decision has been made to open the museum on a monthly basis instead.
The museum – as well as their shop – will open on the last Sunday of each month between May and September. It is free to enter and the displays have recently been renovated so there will be plenty to see.
Hull 96 will be the centrepiece of the display and there will also be the chance to see the initial progress on the restoration of Manchester 173. Visitors will be able to get on board 96 and volunteers should be on hand to talk about the history of the tram which has been operational on the tramway since 1988.
The museum will be open from 1200 to 1600 on:
25th May
29th June
27th July
31st August
27th September
It is located in the former Middleton Road shelter, which has long been the depot and workshop of the tramway.
