2025 is set to be another year of considerable investment in the Manchester Metrolink infrastructure with confirmation of a major closure impacting services through Piccadilly Gardens for over two months from early June to the start of August.
Commencing on Tuesday 3rd June and continuing until Sunday 10th August (normal services should resume from Monday 11th August) no trams will be able to run between Piccadilly Gardens and Piccadilly to allow relaying of the tracks. Piccadilly Gardens stop will be closed completely whilst the stop at Piccadilly will only be served by trams from Ashton-under-Lyne (with no access further into the city centre this likely means that some trams will have to be outstationed away from the depots during the work, although with the length of the work presumably there will be some access at times to allow the trams to receive regular maintenance).
During the two months the following services will run:
Monday to Saturday
- Bury to Altrincham
- Bury to Altrincham (peak time, combined meaning the two lines keep their 6 minute frequency into the centre of Manchester)
- Ashton-under-Lyne to Piccadilly
- Etihad Camps to Piccadilly (possibly one of the shortest timetabled services on Metrolink?)
- Victoria to Eccles via MediaCityUK (using extra double trams)
- Rochdale Town Centre to East Didsbury via Exchange Square
- Shaw and Crompton to East Didsbury (peak time)
- Manchester Airport to Victoria
- The Trafford Centre to Deansgate-Castlefield
Each service runs every 12 minutes
Sunday
- Bury to Altrincham
- Ashton-under-Lyne to Piccadilly
- Etihad Camps to Piccadilly (possibly one of the shortest timetabled services on Metrolink?)
- Victoria to Eccles via MediaCityUK (using extra trams)
- Rochdale Town Centre to East Didsbury via Exchange Square
- Manchester Airport to Victoria
- The Trafford Centre to Deansgate-Castlefield
Each service runs every 15 minutes
No replacement bus services will operate during these works with passenger advised on walking routes (which will be signposted) between stops to enable journeys to be continued. The city centre free buses will also be available for those who prefer.
