Another Metrolink closure on the way for major engineering works

The investment in maintaining the Manchester Metrolink infrastructure will be continuing this spring with a month long closure of the original city centre line via Market Street and Shudehill in March and April 2025.

The work will be taking place between Tuesday 25th March and Wednesday 23rd April and will see rail replacement on Market Street and High Street/Church Street. During this period no trams will be able to run on 1CC with services between St Peter’s Square and Victoria all diverted via 2CC.

There will also be some other service changes in this time:

  • All services from Altrincham will run to Bury via 2CC
  • Services from The Trafford Centre will be extended to Etihad Campus
  • Eccles to Ashton-under-Lyne service will all travel via MediaCityUK

Would be passengers are being advised to complete their cross-city journeys by using Free Bus 1 and 2 services. There will also be a replacement bus – but this will only run outside of the Free Bus operating times. Metrolink tickets will not be valid on any other bus service.

Normal services will resume from Thursday 24th April.

There will then be a further closure on the Oldham and Rochdale line over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend (Saturday 3rd to Monday 5th May). This will see rail renewal between Westwood and Derker and will mean there will be no trams running from Freehold to Rochdale Town Centre. There will be a bus replacement service on which Metrolink tickets will be valid, they won’t be valid on any other bus service.
