Out and About: Edinburgh Trams – October 2024

Another “Out and About” and it’s Edinburgh again.

262 is in an advert for Capital Radio, which its had since July 2023 although with slight alterations to the presenters depicted on the vinyls. In this photo we see it just arriving under blue skies at Port of Leith en route for the Airport. (Photograph by Roy Calderwood, 22nd October 2024)

Scottish Rugby have been a long-time advertiser on Edinburgh Trams and this particular advert was applied in September 2024. A bit of a rarity in that it wasn’t a direct replacement for another advert as 260 had been out of service for several months with accident damage and had been seen around the depot with no adverts at all. Bound for Newhaven, the tram is at McDonald Road with PBSA (purpose built student accommodation) behind. (Photograph by Roy Calderwood, 24th October 2024)

With it being almost the end of October this photo may be in the dark but its only around 1715 as we look west at Picardy Place. We look at the rear of 261 in this image which is making its way from Newhaven to Edinburgh Airport. (Photograph by Roy Calderwood, 29th October 2024)

Here we see the rear of 268 as it turns onto Princes Street from South Saint Andrew Street on its way to the Airport. Its carrying an advert for Lost Shore, which is a new surf resort in the west of the city. Using the messaging “Escape to the City’s Other Shore”, it reminds us that Shore in Edinburgh is now referred to the riverside street in Leith called Shore – where ships tied up on the Water of Leith before the first enclosed docks were built. Behind the tram we see the former Edwardian department store R W Forsyth. Opened in c1907 it closed in the mid 1980s and latterly became a Topman/Topshop and a Travelodge. The former went bust and Travelodge has now also closed but there are plans to revive the building with retail and hotel use. (Photograph by Roy Calderwood, 31st October 2024)
