Another car on the tracks at St Chad’s causes Metro delays

West Midlands Metro services into Birmingham City Centre suffered delays on Wednesday 6th November after a car got stuck on the tracks at St Chad’s. No trams were able to run between St Paul’s and Library for around four hours whilst the car was removed.

Onlookers said that the car was driven onto the tracks and then when it got stuck the driver just got out the vehicle and left it. From the photos below it wasn’t just the case that the driver made a slight wrong turning as they managed to drive all along the grassed section in front of the Two Snow Hill office block, passing the platforms at St Chad’s and then on to the open track beyond the stop where it came stuck at the points.

The first reports of the car being stuck was just after 0915 with West Midlands Metro finally tweeting (x-ing?) at around 1325 that services had now resumed again with the car removed. During the disruption trams ran Wolverhampton Railway Station to St Paul’s and Library to Edgbaston Village.

As if to compound matters the early evening then saw a car block the tracks at Priestfield which led to more delays.

The car firmly stuck at St Chad’s.

This piece of kit was used to move the car from where it had come to rest.

It was then transported down to the road where it was placed on a recovery truck to take it away. (All Photographs by Andy Walters, 6th November 2024)
