In Pictures: Overhead upgrade works for Supertram

So far this year, since SYMCA took control of the South Yorkshire Supertram system in March, there have been many different phases of improvement works on the network. Most of the more high profile works have involved rail replacement but the latest phase is also seeing the upgrade of the overhead wires.

This phase got underway on Saturday 3rd August and is seeing work take place in both the Hollinsend and Herdings Park areas. Because of where the work is taking place the Blue route is operating in two sections with trams from Malin Bridge between terminated at Sheffield Station and then a shuttle from Gleadless Townend to Halfway (the shuttle has required the out-basing of five trams away from the depot for the eight days of the closure).

Initial work on upgrading the overhead is taking place on Ridgeway Road close to Hollinsend tramstop. The tramway here runs on its own dedicated right of way with road traffic either side of the median strip.

Another view as work continues.

A road-rail vehicle with tower platform was also in evidence. (All Photographs by Stuart Cooke, 3rd August 2024)
