Metro performance creeps up again

The last performance period of 2023 (and into early 2024) has given a rare increase in the punctuality of trains on the Tyne and Wear Metro (at least in recent times) with the figures increasing by 20%.

This four week period was 10th December 2023 to 6th January 2024 and in that period the percentage of trains which were reported as being on time was 81%. That may not sound particularly high but when compared with both the previous four weeks (61%) and the same period in 2022/3 (68%) its remarkable. It was July/August 2023 that as many as 81% of trains were on time with all periods since then seeing a major reduction.

The latest poster (which is put up at stations across the network) also has the latest results of the satisfaction survey. This is where 2000 Metro passengers are asked various questions on how the network is doing – and despite the obvious performance issues there have been the results of this still seem fairly positive.

Results (all out of 10)

  • Overall satisfaction – 7.0
  • Cleanliness – 7.2
  • Information – 7.2
  • Safety and comfort – 7.0
  • Staff availability – 5.9
  • Station equipment – 7.1
  • Ticketing – 6.9
