Performance percentage decreases again on Tyne and Wear Metro

The last operating four week period of 2022 (and into early 2023) was not a great one for the Tyne and Wear Metro with performance reducing significantly. It was down by 7% from the previous four weeks and a large 17% from the same four weeks in 2021/2.

The figure released on posters (which can be found at all Metro stations) for the four weeks between 11th December 2022 and 7th January 2023 was 67%. In comparison the previous period was at 74% and in 2021/2 it was at 84%.

Whereas all posters since the pandemic have included no mention of why there have been delays, Nexus have also considered this large decrease deserved a little explanation (in small print!). It says: “We’re sorry for the low punctuality in this period. This was due to the impact of Network Rail repair work in Sunderland which had a knock-on impact across our network, as well as three incidents of cable theft. We are working with Network Rail and police forces to address these issues.”

The poster also gives an update from the latest passenger satisfaction survey which was undertaken during November 2022. This gives an overall rating of 7.3 out of 10 after approximately 2000 Metro passengers were asked their opinions. Individual ratings given were as follows:

  • Station equipment – 7.3
  • Information – 7.4
  • Cleanliness – 7.3
  • Security – 7.1
  • Ticketing – 7.4
  • Staff availability – 6.6
