Picture in Time: Manx Electric Railway 9

The Isle of Man and the Manx Electric Railway is again the subject of “Picture in Time” as we feature another photo taken on June 1977.

As with last week we are at Derby Castle Sheds although instead of featuring an image inside the actual shed we are looking outside at one of the Tunnel Cars undergoing a thorough cleaning. Its 9 that is enjoying a bath, the last of the six Tunnel Cars built in 1894 by G F Milnes (of which just four still exist today following the loss of 4 and 8 in the Laxey Car Sheds fire in 1930). Today 9 is the illuminated tram having had lights originally attached for the Year of the Railways in 1993 but in 1977 it was just another member of the fleet.
