In Pictures: Birmingham Westside extension

Phase Two of the Birmingham Westside extension from Library to Hagley Road, Edgbaston is likely to be the next tramway extension to open in the UK with it currently planned to be welcoming its first passengers in December 2021. Work on the line has been progressing well throughout the pandemic with all track now down and work concentrating on other infrastructure and public realm improvements. Ken Jones took a walk along the line in mid-July to see recent progress.

We start at the end of the line outside 54 Hagley Road. This end of the route will be fitted with overhead wires and the poles for these are already up while work is also continuing on the platforms here.

Just before the terminus is a crossover to allow trams to access both tracks of the stop.

One of the most impressive pieces of infrastructure on the line is the Fiveways underpass. This is the underpass seen from the city side.

Five Ways tramstop, including shelters.

And this is Brindleyplace tramstop, again with shelters already installed.

The start of phase two of the Westside extension on Broad Street is seen here with 20 seen at the current Library terminus. Note also the tracks have white paint either side of them on the road surface. (All Photographs by Ken Jones, 14th July 2021)
