Around the World in Trams: San Francisco 1053

We return to September 2006 for another couple of images of some of the Muni PCCs in action on F-line streetcar service.

In this edition we feature no. 1053 which was acquired by Muni in 1992 from the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). It had been built in 1947 as no. 2721 for the Philadelphia Transportation Company and after its career in Pennsylvania was over it found a new lease of life on the west coast of the USA in San Francisco. After restoration it received a tribute livery for Brooklyn, New York.

In this first view we see 1053 when not in service. It is joined by another unidentified PCC on 20th September 2006.

Then just 24 hours later and 1053 is back in service on the F-line with a working to Fisherman’s Wharf as it passes the Wharf Coffee Shop.

The PCC car behind no. 1053 is 1061 which is in Pacific Electric livery, PE had a fleet of PCC cars but they were double ended, Most if not all of them were sold to Argentina before the PE closed its last line to Long Beach in 1961. No. 1061 was built in 1948 by the St. Louis Car Co. for the Philadelphia Transportation Co. it was sold by the South East Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) to Muni in San Francisco in 1992.
