Lockdown Walks: Stagecoach Supertram 120

In this latest “Lockdown Walks” we head out into Sheffield as we take a look at probably the most popular of all the trams in the fleet, thanks in no small part to its special livery.

Up until 2010, Siemens-Duewag constructed tram 120 was just another one of the 25 strong class, although it had received a couple of advertising liveries during its operating career which got underway in 1994. But with the approaching 50th anniversary of the closure of Sheffield Corporation Tramways in 1960 all that was to change with 120 chosen to receive a special commemorative livery based on Sheffield Corporation colours of cream and blue. Originally envisaged as a short-term livery the tram was released into service without external fleet numbers but as time went on and the livery remained in place these returned. By the time of the 60th anniversary in 2020 the tram was still in this special livery and seems to have firmly established itself as the “celebrity” of the fleet.

Here we see 120 operating a Yellow route service to Meadowhall as it runs along Middlewood Road passing the junction with Dixon Road. (Photograph by Stuart Cooke, 26th February 2021)
