Pantograph damage causes more Metrolink delays

For the second time in less than a week services on Manchester Metrolink were disrupted, with the problem this time being put down to the severe damage sustained by a tram’s pantograph as it arrived from the direction of the city centre at Victoria. The disruption happened on Wednesday 3rd March and saw no trams able to run through Victoria for several hours.

The exact circumstances surrounding the damage to the pantograph is not known but the damage was severe enough to mean that all services on both 1CC and 2CC into Victoria were suspended from the morning until late afternoon. The tram was finally recovered and returned to depot allowing repairs to the overhead to take place with trams able to run through Victoria again from late afternoon.

During the disruption Victoria was closed completely to trams with those services running from Rochdale Town Centre terminating at Monsall and those from Bury at Queens Road. The East Didbsury and Airport lines were also turned short of their usual destinations.
