Picture in Time: Oporto 196

In this edition of “Picture in Time” we are featuring another of the resident trams at Beamish.

Originally acquired as a source of parts to aid the restoration of other more local trams, Oporto 196 arrived in the northeast in 1989. After an initial inspection it was realised that the tram was in a good condition (it had been withdrawn in Portugal after a collision although the damage this caused was only relatively superficial) and a start was made on making it fully operational. It entered service in 1992 under the fake identity of Beamish Tramways 196 with a coat of Gateshead paint applied. It subsequently, in 2012, receiving a repaint into the attractive South Shields livery which is how it can be seen today.

On 5th May 2002, 196 is seen at the Entrance. In the Gateshead livery and with the Beamish Tramways lettering the tram has since undergone a makeover. Gateshead 10 can also be seen in this photo with both trolleys seen which makes it look as if 196 has a strange double trolley setup!
