Picture in Time: Newcastle 114

Our regular “Picture in Time” series looking at traditional trams not operating in Blackpool moves on to Beamish for the next few weeks and we start off with a tram which originated from nearby Newcastle.

Newcastle 114 has been in service at Beamish since May 1996 following the completion of a lengthy restoration back to its original condition. 114 first entered service in Newcastle in 1901 and after various improvements and withdrawal in the northeast it was sold on to Sheffield for further use between 1941 and 1951 (renumbered as 317). The remains of the tram were found in Scunthorpe and after an extensive restoration it returned to action in 1996.

In this view – taken on 22nd June 2009 – we see 114 in the depot at Beamish. Behind is Oporto 196 when in its Beamish Tramways livery.
