Around the World in Trams: Melbourne 893

This week’s edition of “Around the World in Trams” is staying in Auckland, New Zealand at MOTAT but instead of a tram which used to operate on the streets of the city we see a newcomer in the form of a W class tram from Melbourne.

We are looking at Melbourne 893, a SW6 class tram which entered service in Melbourne in November 1944. It remained in service until 1997 when it was withdrawn and placed in the Ready Reserve fleet. That was until preservation came and it departed Australia for the last time to head across to New Zealand onboard the Coral Chief during July 2008. It features the original Green and Cream livery and is one of the workhorses at MOTAT.

The tram is on the crossover at the MOTAT 2 terminus with its dual gauge track on 27th February 2020. The photo has been taken from the top deck of Wellington 47, a tram which will be featured in this series soon.
