Around the World in Trams: Vienna 21

We head back to Vienna for our latest foray into looking at trams from outside the British Isles.

Low floor trams were first introduced to Vienna in 1995 when the Ultra Low Floor (ULF) trams entered service. We see one of the type A ULF cars here in no. 21 which is running on route 37 on Wahringer Strasse near Schottentor where trams run on two levels. The A type tram is a five section, 24.2m long vehicle and don’t have conventional bogies but the internally mounted motors each drive an individual wheel. This means that there is near level access from pavement stops with the height of the floor being just 197mm.
