Still standing! Birmingham’s 1st Generation Tram Tracks

Whilst our attention recently in the West Midlands has very much been concerned with the laying of new tram tracks for extensions of the West Midlands Metro there are also still some survivors of the original first generation system around the area as we see in this latest edition of “Still Standing”.

One such location is in Chamberlain Square near the museum and art gallery where a short section of the 3’6” gauge tracks has been kept, amongst the much more modern block paving. With the Birmingham Corporation Tramways system closing in 1953 these tracks must be at least 70 years old – a true survivor!
