Its been a long-time coming but Monday 29th September 2025 finally saw the return of passenger services to Wolverhampton St George’s as for the first time in its history the West Midlands Metro has three terminus stops.
It had been two years, one month and a day since you could last take a trip on the tram to Wolverhampton St George’s with the stop being closed from 28th August 2023 (for what was originally due to be a short-period with it expected to reopen in the autumn of the same year). This was to allow the Wolverhampton Station extension to be brought into the network but despite this opening in September 2023 there was no sign of trams returning to St George’s. And the wait went on and on, with building works alongside the stop believed to be partly to blame for the delay.
Although some expressed fears it would never reopen, there were clear plans for it to do so with it receiving a ticket machine when these were being installed. Work then started during the summer to get the infrastructure ready with a three-day closure and then earlier this month it was announced trams would return on a temporary timetable from 29th September 2025.
This is just a temporary return for now though and trams will only be serving the stop Monday to Saturday between 0700 and 1900. Alternate departures from Edgbaston Village will go to Wolverhampton St George’s with the others heading to Wolverhampton Station, outside of the 0700-1900 time everything goes to the Station as before.
The temporary timetable is in place until 18th October after which more works are needed and the stop is closed again. Its then likely that early November will see a permanent return, with preparations for the opening of the extension to Millennium Point also taking place from that date.
