New safety videos released as WMM prepares to expand testing

With testing and driver training on the Birmingham Westside extension set to expand in the coming weeks, West Midlands Metro and the Midland Metro Alliance have released a series of safety videos giving simple tips on how to stay safe when going around Birmingham City Centre.

The videos are being released to coincide with Road Safety Week (18th-24th November) and will appear on local television station Birmingham TV as well as being made available online. And that’s not where the safety campaign ends either as postcards have been distributed to travel shops, offices and businesses in the city ahead of the trams becoming far more visible in new areas of the city.

Anthony Stanley, Head of Quality, Health and Environment for West Midlands Metro, said: “Trams travel across city streets all across the world and it’s a really safe method of public transport. With the Birmingham Westside Metro extension preparing to open, trams will be moving very frequently in places they previously haven’t as we complete full timetable tests. Ahead of December’s opening, it is obviously crucial for people to stay alert by following the tips in the videos released for Road Safety Week 2019.”

The videos give tips to keep people safe including advice for cyclists and to keep alert when using mobile phones of headphones close to the tramway. The public are also reminded the correct way to cross Metro tracks.
