With the West Midlands Metro to expand in the coming months (with the line to Millennium Point on the Eastside extension due to open before the end of the year, and the Dudley line at some point in 2026), a new campaign focused on tram door awareness and etiquette has been launched.
Although the message is launched just before the network expands, it is relevant for everyone who travels on the trams – whether that be a first-time passenger or a seasoned commuter.
The campaign includes a series of short, informative videos that highlight common mistakes like rushing through closing doors, trying to force doors open or blocking exits, and offers simple, practical tips to keep everyone safe and the service running smoothly.
Don Walters, Metro’s Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSSE) Manager, said: “The vast majority of customers behave responsibly when getting on or off the tram, but we sometimes see people putting themselves and others at risk, particularly when they are in a hurry, thus rushing towards the closing doors.
“We encourage passengers to wait for others to exit the tram before boarding themselves, helping to prevent people from bumping into each other in the doorway. At the same time, standing well clear of the doors will help people to disembark swiftly and safely. A little patience and respect for others go a long way in making tram travel safer and more enjoyable for everyone.”
The campaign will also remind passengers to keep bags, straps, walking sticks and other items well clear of closing doors.
