In Pictures: Ratchet Car 14 relaunched

For the first time since 1978 – by our reckoning that’s 40 years ago! – Ratchet Car 14 has officially carried passengers following its launch back into service on Monday 3rd September as the Manx Electric Railway 125th Anniversary events continue.

14 was officially launched at 0900 before undertaking a special journey to Laxey for all those who had been involved in its restoration. It shouldn’t be forgotten that the work on 14 was undertaken not only be paid staff of Isle of Man Railways but also by volunteers and we are sure you will agree that the resulting product is an excellent example of team work.

This photo shows 14 – being driven by Ian Longworth, Director of Public Transport – doing the honours as he drives the tram out of Derby Castle Sheds to drop down to Derby Castle terminus for the launch and first run. (Photograph by Jim Smythe)
