Picture in Time: Manx Electric Railway 22

With the 125th Anniversary events of the Manx Electric Railway now underway where better than the Isle of Man for today’s edition of Picture in Time. We head back to 1979 for this image showing Winter Saloon 22.

This photo is full of interest with the whole scene dominated by the Summerland complex where it would appear if swimming was your thing it was the place to be! This was the replacement Summerland complex after the tragic fire of 1973 and remained in place until the early part of the 21st century. As well as the actual complex we also see a bridge across the road leading to the promenade. There are also several period vehicles parked at the side of the street.

As for the main attraction in the photo we see Winter Saloon 22 and an unidentified trailer on the final approach to Derby Castle. The motor is carrying the standard fleet livery along with the Isle of Man Railways legend on the side panels.
