Picture in Time: Manchester Light Rail demonstration

We are off to Manchester again for this edition of Picture in Time but instead of featuring one of the trams which have operated on Metrolink we go back a little further to 1987 when a key demonstration took place.

In March 1987 there was a Project Light Rail demonstration at Debdale Park which saw the original Docklands Light Railway 11 fitted with a pantograph and used on a disused railway line to show dignitaries in Greater Manchester just what light rail may be able to achieve.

In this photo we see 11 operating a demonstration run complete with pantograph and still in standard DLR colours.
