In Pictures: Tram Train works continue

The Spring Bank Holiday weekend saw further works taking place to bring the Sheffield to Rotherham Tram Train project to fruition. National rail services through Rotherham were cancelled over the weekend to allow a new bridge to be put in place. This bridge runs over the tracks at the main Rotherham railway station and needed replacement in order for the overhead wires to be installed. Stuart Cooke provides us with photos of the new bridge.

The new bridge is seen from end of the platforms at Rotherham Station. This bridge is on Bridge Street.

Another view of the new bridge as Class 142 Pacer DMU 142 079 travels underneath on Monday 29th May. (Both Photographs by Stuart Cooke)

Does anyone know where the route will terminate in Sheffield? Will it be at the Cathedral and if so will this impact the Herdings Park service which also uses this stop to terminate at.

  2. Michael says:

The four trams allocated to the Rotherham service will terminate at Cathedral. The journey time is estimated at 25 mins, so a 15 min frequency looks likely. This should not cause any problem with the usual 20 min frequency on the Herdings service.

  3. Daniel says:

Thanks, out of interest do you know how many trams operate on each route?

  4. Michael says:

I think the normal day time output from the current fleet of 25 trams is 8 for the yellow route (Middlewood-Meadowhall), 11 for the blue route (Malin Bridge-Halfway), and 2 for the purple route (Herdings-Cathedral). At peak times every available tram can be in use.

Pleasing to see. Its certainly encouraging that whilst passing through Sheffield seems to be increasingly normal to see Tram-Trains on test and appears at least to be going quite smoothly since the rather high profile break down. Hopefully its sign things slowly starting to come together. Its certainly critical pilot that key to future ones.
