Picture in Time: Midland Metro construction work

An archive image with a difference for Picture in Time today as we feature an image without a tram in sight during the construction of Midland Metro.

The date of this photo is 10th July 1998 and shows the construction work well underway at Priestfield. In the background the stop can be seen almost complete whilst work is continuing further up the line towards the road section on the way to Wolverhampton. Although there are no trams in this image a diesel locomotive – one of two used by Grant Rail in the construction of the line – is visible alongside various other pieces of construction equipment. Construction of Midland Metro had begun in November 1995 at West Bromwich and by this time was approaching its conclusion ahead of the eventual opening of the line on 30th May 1999.
