In Pictures: Beamish prepare to bid farewell to 147

On Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th March, Blackpool Standard car 147 operated in passenger service at Beamish Museum for what was expected to be the final time, prior to its preparation for return to Blackpool later this month. The tram was one of five to see use over the weekend for a special enhanced tram service at the museum’s first ‘Power from the Past’ event of 2017, meaning that all of the current operational fleet were used.

147 has been a regular performer at Beamish for the past year – indeed it was first used at the corresponding event weekend in March last year! However its loan period is now almost at end and to capitalise on this, enthusiasts were given a final chance to sample the tram in its temporary North East home with the special weekend. In truth the tram-themed ‘Power from the Past’ weekends of late have barely warranted a special event tag with little more than a four-car service to offer, but it was pleasing that 147‘s last runs were promoted and tied in with a chance to ride on every tram that is currently serviceable. This comprised Sunderland 16, Newcastle 114, Blackpool 147, Oporto 196 and Sheffield 264. On the Saturday, 16 was initially kept in the depot before replacing 114 in service for the latter part of the day.

147 is expected to be transported home imminently, with Blackpool 31 also being returned to Beamish. This car requires some workshop attention although it has not yet been confirmed whether this will be undertaken before it re-enters service there, or if it will be attended to at a later date to ensure that five trams remain available for service this season.

A charming scene from 4th March with Standard 147 looking very at home in the period Town area at Beamish.

147 meets the recently overhauled Sheffield 264 at Foulbridge passing loop.

Another delightful double-deck pair. This time 147 is joined by Sunderland 16 at the entrance tram stop at the end of the day.
