Trams on the shortlist for the Heritage Railway Association Awards

It has been announced that two trams have been nominated in the Diesel and Electric Locomotion category at the 2025 Heritage Railway Association Awards. They are amongst 50 projects, people and achievements that have made the final shortlists, with the winners set to be named at a ceremony held in Newcastle on Saturday 8th February 2025.

Services suspended in Blackpool and Edinburgh as Manchester also sees disruption

Storm Eowyn made its presence felt on Friday 24th January bringing with it strong winds and warnings for people to stay at home and not risk journeys. Those who did need to make essential journeys would find it more difficult than usual as there was transport disruption including the complete suspension of tram services in both Blackpool and Edinburgh.

Winter Saloons in the works on the MER

Its still a couple of months before services will resume for another year on the Manx Electric Railway but there is still plenty of activity taking place in the Derby Castle Workshops. Several of the Winter Saloons have been seeing attention, with one motor getting ready for its first use since the end of 2022.

Edinburgh Trams to run reduced service during Storm Eowyn

Storm Eowyn – the latest named storm to hit the UK – is likely to cause more travel disruption and in preparation, and following advice from the Scottish Government and Police Scotland, Edinburgh Trams have confirmed that they will run a limited service on Friday 24th January 2025.

Metro performance plummets

Look away now if you’re of a delicate disposition. The latest performance figures on the Tyne and Wear Metro have been released (as normal shown on posters put up at stations on the network) and they make for very disappointing reading being significantly below the same period in 2023/4.

In Pictures: Temporary arrangements at Wednesbury as work takes place on two lines

The morning of Sunday 19th January 2025 saw another milestone in the Black Country line, which will initially see the West Midlands Metro system extended to Dudley, when a temporary closure saw work take place to allow the new track to be connected to the existing Birmingham to Wolverhampton line. During the work a special service ran from Wednesbury Great Western Street to Wolverhampton Station, which included battery operation and single line running.

EATM launch volunteer campaign

The East Anglia Transport Museum at Carlton Colville near Lowestoft in Suffolk have launched a campaign for more volunteers. The museum has continued to expand and go from strength to strength in recent years – and won the British Trams Online Tramway/Museum of the Year 2024 – and as they look further to the future they are now looking for more volunteers to join the team.

In Pictures: Trackwork continues at Beamish

As we’ve reported on several occasions recently, if you head along to Beamish at the moment you won’t have the opportunity to ride on a tram. The tramway will be closed for the next few months to allow important maintenance work to take place, including on the infrastructure such as the track.

Funding bids being prepared for Tramtown

2025 could be an important year for the hopes of creating a tram museum in Blackpool with funding bids currently being prepared to help the “vision” to be achieved. Local Councillor, and Tramtown volunteer, Paul Galley released a New Year video in which he said that they were working behind the scenes on preparing bids which it is hoped will help go towards bringing Tramtown to life.
