West Midlands Metro trams on the move

It looks like a new year’s resolution of the West Midlands Metro is not to stop moving their trams around! The past week has seen not one but two trams depart from Wednesbury Depot, with the Harry Needle storage facility at Worksop believed to have been the destination for both.

Its been a while since we’ve reported on tram moves involving West Midlands Metro trams but that hasn’t been because they’ve been staying put, but more that its no longer that newsworthy no-one seems to notice when it happens!

But this week has seen two on the move. As always these are from the original 2013-5 batch of trams, which continue to be swapped in and out of off-site storage whilst depot redevelopment works progress meaning there is less space available at the Wednesbury facility.

The two latest moves saw 36 leave late on Tuesday 14th January and then that was followed by 34 on Friday 17th January 2025. 34 had been used in service quite frequently up until the start of November after which time it hasn’t been noted in action.

The last update of trams we had from Worksop saw 25, 29 and 37 at the Nottinghamshire facility but this may now be out of date.

It a shame the old snow hill terminal could have been reconnected and a couple of trams stored there.

Also the old South staffs line between Wednesbury to Walsall I know this has foliage if this was cleared it could possibly be a better location to store trams as it adjacent to the depot.
