Supertram Engineering Works to disrupt services over Easter

Essential engineering works on the major junction at Park Square just outside Sheffield City Centre will see major disruption to services on the Supertram network from 2000 on Saturday 3rd April until the start of service on Tuesday 6th April (Easter weekend). During this period no trams will run on any route with limited replacement bus services announced and prospective passengers guided towards normal services buses with ticket acceptance in place for those with tram tickets.

Warning given after spate of criminal damage to trams and buses in Greater Manchester

The Greater Manchester TravelSafe Partnership (TSP) has issued a warning of the consequences of throwing objects at trams and buses after an increase in incidents during 2021. They are taking swift action and reviewing footage to identify those involved and using combined operator intelligence to target patrols in the areas where incidents are most likely to happen.

Still Standing! Huddersfield tram track

One of the surprising aspects of this series has been just how much old tram track there is still lying in open sight, especially when you consider how long ago it was that first generation tramways were abandoned. While some track is deliberately displayed as a historic artefact with plaques and signs much of this track is just there with no fan fare – and so it is in Huddersfield.

NET complete second refurbishment of their Incentro trams

All 15 of the original Bombardier Incentro trams on the Nottingham Express Transit system are now back in service after the £3.5 million refurbishment programme was completed. The last of the trams re-entered service on Tuesday 23rd March 2021 with the project having started in spring 2019.

Public Consultation launched for improvements at Rotherham Parkgate

South Yorkshire PTE have launched a consultation into several transport improvement at Rotherham Parkgate which should make it easier for passengers to access the Supertram Tram-Train service from there into Sheffield. Included in the proposals are improved road access, better walking and cycling infrastructure and an enlarged Park and Ride car park adjacent to the Tram-Train stop.

Increase in prices on NET for Robin Hood Pay as you Go card users

Anyone who uses the Robin Hood Pay as you Go card to pay for travel on Nottingham Express Transit will see a small increase in their fares from Sunday 28th March. Despite these increases this will remain the cheapest way for passengers purchasing either a single or a day journey.

Trams in Video: Glasgow Trams in preservation

This latest edition of “Trams in Video” is mainly shot at the Crich Tramway Village and an event held in September 2012 which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the closure of Glasgow Corporation Tramways. Split into three sections in part one we see the Glasgow trams at that event with part two then including all the other trams out on that day. Then in the final part there is archive film of Glasgow trams at Crich and of Glasgow 1017 at Summerlee.

Blackpool Council asked to approve £900,000 worth of funding for tramway repairs

As you will have seen on these pages over the past few weeks there has been extensive trackworks taking place on the Blackpool Tramway – with the work taking more than twice the length than originally planned for – but this seems to be just the start as Blackpool Council are being asked to approve £900,000 worth of funding towards a £1.1 million project for further work.

Tyne and Wear Metro use UV light to help keep system Covid secure

Nexus have fitted Ultraviolet equipment on all 36 escalators on the Tyne and Wear Metro network as part of their continued range of Covid secure measures. The UV light is used to sanitise the escalator handrails with germs being killed and is a safe and effective method of protecting high touch surfaces from coronavirus.

More DfT funding for English light rail systems

The Department for Transport have confirmed that a further £33 million in emergency Coronavirus funding is to be awarded to the six English light rail systems outside of London (London Tramlink and the Docklands Light Railway are supported through the separate TfL funding package) to cover the next 11 weeks. The funding is in recognition of the continuing decrease in passenger revenue and will help to ensure that the essential – and in most cases reduced – services can continue to operate as the country moves along the previously announced roadmap out of lockdown.

In Pictures: Latest look at the future site of the Blackpool North Station tram terminus

Since the end of 2020 when the last remnants of the old Wilko’s store on Talbot Road were demolished visible progress on site which will eventually become the site of the tramway terminus at Blackpool North Railway Station has been fairly limited. But over the past few weeks there has been an attempt to level off the site as preparations continue for the construction of the tram terminus as well as a new hotel.

Greater Manchester concessionary pass renewals deadline extended

Any Greater Manchester concessionary pass holders whose £10 tram and train add-on is due to expire before 21st June 2021 has been given a three month extension as Transport for Greater Manchester reiterate the current “essential travel only” guidance. More than 120,000 concessionary pass holders add-ons are due to expire between February and 21st June 2021 but they will now be able to carry on travelling with their current pass.
