Picture in Time: Tyne and Wear Metro locomotive

We make one final trip to the Tyne and Wear Metro test track today as we feature a locomotive used in case any assistance was needed.

Obviously, in an ideal world the new Metrocars would run smoothly during testing and wouldn’t need any assistance but on the off chance there were any issues a diesel locomotive was on site and the below photo shows that very loco. This 0-4-0D, Hunslet 4264 of 1952 was painted yellow and received the Tyne and Wear PTE logos for its role as seen here at rest inside the depot. It originally worked the MoD lines at Portsmouth Dockyard and was supplied to the Metro in 1974 by Track Supplies and Services of Wolverton.

Date is again 6th June 1976.
