Centenary Square Metro extension plans to move forward

Members of Birmingham City Council are expected to approve £3 million worth of funding to go towards the design and development of the next planned extension of Midland Metro between New Street and Centenary Square at a meeting to be held early next week.

The £3 million would be used to draw up detailed plans and to prepare the business case for the extension which would carry on from the line currently being constructed between Snow Hill and New Street onto Centenary Square. The line would actually become the first project to be funded through the Birmingham City Centre Enterprise Zone which allows investment in infrastructure to be made through future business rates – but that would only become available if the business case is approved.

It is expected that the extension would cost £30million (more than half of this coming from the Enterprise Zone) and all being well construction would start in 2017.
