It may only have been launched in May 2025, but Edinburgh Trams have already reached one million Top-On, Tap-Off journeys. The milestone was reached over the weekend of 25th and 26th October 2025, just over five months after the first journeys were possible on 19th May 2025.
Tap-On, Tap-Off (ToTo for short) allows passengers to simply tap their contactless card or device before boarding the tram and then tap-off when they leave the tram on the platform validators.
It puts passengers first and offers a seamless, stress-free way to pay for their journey, and also benefits from an integrated daily and weekly cap across Edinburgh Trams and Lothian Buses.
Marilena Papadopoulou, Edinburgh Trams Heads of Projects and Renewals, commented: “TOTO allows a seamless tram and bus travel across the city for residents, commuters, and visitors alike and reaching one million Tap On, Tap Off journeys in under six months is a fantastic achievement. The success of the system is a clear sign that our customers are embracing a smarter, more flexible travel in the Scottish capital.
“This milestone reflects the continued growth of tram usage across Edinburgh. We are committed to continue delivering sustainable ticketing options, and Tap On, Tap Off is helping us to achieve this, whilst also future proofing the tramway and how people travel across Edinburgh.”
And as the millionth journey is recorded, also comes the launch of Apple Pay Express Mode, which will mean the use of ToTo is even faster and more convenient for Apple Pay users.
