Pontoon Dock DLR station to enjoy major upgrade

Funding has now been confirmed to allow a major upgrade of the DLR station at Pontoon Dock to take place. The work is planned to improve capacity and accessibility, helping to meet the needs of growing numbers using the station a regular basis.

The project will include the installation of six new escalators, a large mezzanine level, and improvements to the surrounding area, including improved public space, landscaping and potential for new retail space.

Pontoon Dock station is one of the highest on the DLR network being around 13 metres above street level. Currently access is limited to stairs and lifts which means that at peak times, around half of those using the station rely on the lifts often leading to congestion and longer journey times.

The development of the station and the surrounding area is part of the wider Silvertown Quays development, which has the aim of creating a vibrant urban neighbourhood with a variety of housing, including affordable housing, and over 10,000 sqm of new employment space. This redevelopment is expected to see an extra 4,500 customers will use the station during peak times – an increase of 415%. These station improvements will play a vital role in supporting this extra footfall.

Construction isn’t expected to start until summer 2026 and should be finished by the end of 2028. Pontoon Dock should remain open throughout most of the works. Funding is 75% third-party funded including contributions from Homes England and the Greater London Authority, developer contributions from Lendlease and funding from TfL’s Sustainable Housing and Accessibility Fund.

Alex Williams, Chief Customer and Strategy Officer at TfL, said: “Our vision is a London where everyone can move around the city safely, comfortably and sustainably. The transformation at Pontoon Dock will make life easier and more comfortable for customers, through reduced congestion and enhanced accessibility. It will also play a central role in supporting important regeneration in the local area, helping to unlock around 6,500 new homes and 10,000 new jobs at Silvertown Quays.”
