Stop by Stop London Trams: New Addington line – Gravel Hill

In the latest edition of “Stop by Stop” our journey on the London Trams New Addington line continues as we make our way towards Croydon.

Last time out we were at Addington Village and after we depart from that stop we quickly come to another signalled road crossing as we continue to curve to the left. This time we are passing Kent Gate Way and the tram now runs on a median strip down the middle of that road with a dual carriageway either side of the tram. Addington Park and Addington Palace are passed on the right hand side in direction of travel with more fields the other side too. Its not long before the next interaction with road traffic either as we turn across Kent Gateway again before the track curves round to run alongside Gravel Hill and then finally we cross it on the approach to the stop of the same name.

This stop is again away from the road and its another stop which has platforms either side of the stop with all the regular items we come to expect on each platform. There is a ramp leading from Gravel Hill and the only pedestrian access from one side to the other is at the Addington Village end with no facility at the other end.

2539 is at Gravel Hill in this image as it pauses on the way into central Croydon. Two points of access to this platform can be seen whilst on the far side the yellow handrail shows the ramp leading up to Gravel Hill.

Looking back towards New Addington as 2547 departs Gravel Hill. It is just passing the pedestrian crossing and the traffic lights of the road crossing can just be seen beyond the tram. (Both Photographs by Gareth Prior, 21st April 2025)
