Around the World in Trams: Milan 1818

We have one last shot from San Francisco in 2002 in this “Around the World in Trams” but this time we move away from the PCCs.

This is Milan “Peter Witt” car 1818 which was built in 1928 for operation in the Italian city. Milan had a large fleet of 500 “Peter Witts” and some remain operational in that city to this day. But 1818 is one of eleven which have made San Francisco their home. This all came about after one of the class (1834) visited San Francisco in 1984 for the summer trolley festival and proved so popular Muni decided to get some more in 1998.

This photo shows 1818 at Fisherman’s Wharf when carrying the 1970s orange livery. It has since been repainted into the green livery carried between the 1930s and 1960s.
