Manchester Metrolink Then & Now: Victoria

Staying in Manchester City Centre for this week’s “Manchester Metrolink Then & Now” as we take a look at Victoria Station.

Of course today we are well used to trams entering the side of Victoria Station as they head off to Bury and Rochdale but in this 1990 view that was still very much to come and it would be hard to imagine what would be coming. The pedestrian entrance to the station is on the left with the “hole in the wall” as it would become known to be added on the right hand side of this image.

In the now photo, taken on 30th August 2023, we see 3124 entering Victoria with a service to Rochdale (it’s the back unit of a double). The pedestrian station entrance is seen just on the left to give us context and comparison. This is the second iteration of the entrance to Victoria with it redesigned and what was originally coined the “hole in the wall” becoming a much larger entrance, along with extra tracks for 2CC.
