A new online system which allows contractors and members of the public to apply for a permit to work alongside the Edinburgh Trams system is celebrating its own milestone following the processing of over a thousand applications since being introduced shortly before the opening of the Trams to Newhaven extension.
Described as a pioneering new system, it can be used by anyone who plans to carry out activities on or around the city’s trams. Known as PERMIT+ it has an associated mobile app which make it both quicker and easier for staff at Edinburgh Trams to review each application. In addition it allows the engineering team to provided detailed information about fees so contractors understand what charges will apply and when they will have to be paid.
Iain McLeod, Edinburgh Trams Authority to Work Manager, said: “By using PERMIT+ we have been able to manage an increased workload both safely and efficiently, especially after the launch of services to Newhaven earlier this year. For added convenience for the applicants, the system notifies them when a site visit is needed, and priority is given to urgent works to be carried out at short notice. It also allows them to upload all the documentation online, after which the permit is issued electronically and signed over the phone.”
