Man taken to hospital after being involved in collision with a tram

A 77 year old man was taken to hospital,  where his condition was described as being critical, after he was hit by a tram at Robinswood tramstop on the Manchester Airport line of Metrolink. The incident happened at around 1420 on Thursday 17th August.

In a statement released the day following the collision Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 2.20pm yesterday (Thursday 17 August 2023), officers were called to reports of an incident on Simonsway, Wythenshawe. It was established that a cyclist had collided with a tram after entering the level crossing area. The cyclist, a 77-year-old male, is in a critical condition in hospital. No arrests have been made and both the tram driver and Metrolink are assisting the police with their enquiries. Officers would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision occur, or those who may have footage of the incident – including CCTV, mobile or dashcam – should contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 quoting log 2052 of 17/08/23.”

The incident has been referred to the RAIB.

Tram services on the Airport line were running from Victoria to Wythenshawe Town Centre only following the incident.
